Door Installation in Mitcham

Front doors and porches, internal doors, fire doors and garden doors for Mitcham homes.

We fit doors across Mitcham and CR4. On inter-war semis that often means a new front door, sometimes with a small porch built in front, plus internal doors through the house and fire doors when the loft is converted. On extensions we fit bi-fold, sliding or French doors onto the garden.

WHAT WE DO

Door fitting in Mitcham

A front porch can be built without planning permission in many cases, as long as its floor area is no more than three square metres, it is no more than three metres high and it sits at least two metres from a boundary with a road. We check those limits on site and build the porch and fit the door together.

Inside, we hang new doors and adjust old ones, and fit fire-rated doors to the rooms off the stairs when a loft conversion adds a floor. On extensions, we fit glazed doors with the steel or lintel above designed as part of the build.

IN MITCHAM

Doors for Mitcham's houses

Many Mitcham semis and terraces from the 1920s and 1930s were built with timber front doors, some with leaded or coloured glass. If yours has survived, repair and draught-proofing can keep it going. If it has already been replaced, we can fit a new door in a style that suits the house.

In the Cricket Green conservation area, Merton’s appraisal records the loss of original porches, windows and doors as harmful to the area’s character. If you live there, we recommend repairing original doors, and we check with you before any replacement that might need permission.

GOOD TO KNOW

Door questions from Mitcham homeowners

Do I need planning permission for a front porch?

Often not. A porch is usually permitted development if it is no more than three square metres in floor area, no more than three metres high and at least two metres from a boundary with a road. Flats don’t have this right.

Can you fit a composite front door?

Yes. Composite doors are low-maintenance and secure. On a period house, or in the Cricket Green conservation area, a timber door may suit the house better.

Which doors change when we add a loft room?

The doors from habitable rooms onto the stairs on each floor usually need to be fire-rated, so there is a protected route out. We fit them during the conversion.

Bi-fold or sliding doors: which is better for an extension?

Bi-folds open the full width, while sliding doors have slimmer frames and more glass when closed. We talk through what suits your garden and how you use it.

Can you repair my original 1930s front door?

Usually. We repair the timber, replace damaged glass panels, add draught seals and fit new locks.
