Joinery repairs, staircases, second fix and fitted units for Clapham’s period and listed houses.
Our carpenters work across Clapham and SW4. A lot of the joinery here is old and worth keeping: panelled doors, moulded skirting, stair balusters and handrails in Georgian and Victorian houses. We repair what can be saved, make matching pieces where it can’t, and carry out the first and second fix carpentry on extensions, lofts and refurbishments.
Much of our Clapham carpentry is repair work: easing and re-hanging panelled doors, piecing in new timber where skirting or architrave has rotted, and tightening stairs that creak or have loose balusters. Repairing original joinery usually costs less than replacing it, and it keeps the character of the room.
On new work we cover the full sequence, from floor joists, stud walls and roof timbers before plastering to skirting, architraves, doors and built-in units afterwards. The same carpenters work on our Clapham extensions and loft conversions.

Clapham has many listed houses, particularly in the Old Town, around Grafton Square, Rectory Grove and Crescent Grove, and along the edges of the Common. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so removing or replacing original joinery such as staircases, panelling or doors can need listed building consent. Careful like-for-like repair usually does not.
The Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Abbeville Road and Clapham South are not usually listed, but they still have plenty of original joinery: four-panel doors, deep skirting and turned newel posts. Where pieces are missing or damaged, we match them so the repair blends in.
We look at what needs doing, note anything original and send a quote.

Usually, yes. We fix loose balusters, replace worn or split treads and secure handrails, keeping as much of the original stair as possible.
Like-for-like repair usually does not need consent. Removing or replacing original features such as doors, panelling or a staircase normally does. If in doubt, we check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Yes. Common Victorian and Edwardian profiles are available from stock, and we have unusual or Georgian profiles run to order.
Yes. A single door, a staircase repair or a pair of alcove cupboards is fine.
Yes. Our carpenters handle the structural timber and the finishing on our own extension and loft projects, and can do the same on a project you are managing yourself.
Carpentry is one of ten building services we offer across Clapham and SW4. If your project needs more than one, we run them as a single job.
